Hello, Scott, Great to know that you want to make a movie about radio control models! Good luck with it! You can be sure that there are many local modelers who will be glad to offer you any information or help you may need. I estimate there are around 250 rc modelers just here in this south Alabama area. As I mentioned there are several radio controlled aircraft clubs in the area, a couple of them very close to you. Here is information about local clubs and a few contacts for you: In Fairhope, there's the South Alabama R/C Modelers (SARCM) club. They put on an extremely popular fly-in around April/May each year at the Polo Field in Point Clear, Alabama. The organizer of that event and a SARCM member is Nick Neville (928-4520, Nicholas.Neville@worldnet.att.net ). There are a couple more clubs in your area, one in Foley (Bay Area Radio Control Society - BARCS) and one in Summerdale (they changed names, and I don't remember to what...) Nick can give you more info about the Foley club as he belongs to that one too, I believe. The people in Summerdale fly off of a Navy field (Whiting Field I believe's the name) with large runways, where some area modelers fly their ducted fan "jets". Most clubs don't have runways long enough to accommodate jets (but we do here in Irvington!) The President of that club is Steve Keesey. I don't have his number, but I'm pretty sure Nick has it, if you need it. In Mobile, there are two clubs, the Lower Alabama R/C club (LARC) that flies at Battleship Memorial Park on the Causeway, and Azalea City Model Aeronautics (ACMA, the club I belong to.) We fly in Irvington, just south of Theodore, Alabama. The Lower Alabama R/C club at Battleship Park has about 50 members and can be contacted through club President Wes Batson (626-5364, giles202@aol.com ). If you need someone to put you on an impressive flying demo of what modern-day aerobatic models are capable of, get Wes to do it! One of the models Wes flies is a 112 inch wingspan aerobatic model that costs in the neighborhood of $5,000. He is VERY good! Many of the LARC guys are into fine scale models, many 1/4 scale. Some of those members belong to the IMAA, the International Miniature Aircraft Association, which deals strictly with aircraft models larger than 80 inch wingspan. A couple of skilled scale modelers in that club are Henry Waltman and Bruce Lund. Bruce is also a model designer. My club, the Azalea City Model Aeronautics club flies in Irvington, Alabama. The County just finished building our new asphalt runway, adding 100 ft. to it, making it 600 ft. long! We now have the best model runway in the area! We have 81 members, and just last month we voted to have an IMAA charter club also. We have club members ranging in age from 11 to "pretty old", and a wide variety of models including scale models, jets, helicopters, gliders, and electrics. There are about a dozen or so members in our club who fly model helicopters (I just started learning to fly one - quite a challenge!) If you need someone to put on a fine demonstration of helicopter flying, Alvin Reed is the man. He is one of our club members and the best model chopper pilot in this area, bar none! Alvin can be reached at (660-0071, adrreed@aol.com ). Alvin also has an excellent Web site with many members' photos and rc related links. To go there, click here on this link Alvin's R/C Online or go to: http://www.angelfire.com/al/airbornerc/index.html Our club has a Web site. The Web Master is also our club President, Mike Moore (957-6794, Bkndsdl@ispchannel.com ). To go to our Web site, click here ACMA Web Site or go to: http://www.zebra.net/~Bkndsdl/acmaf.htm I am one of the flight instructors in our club, and am the Newsletter Editor. I publish a monthly newsletter, the Azalea City Aviator, accessible from Alvin's Web Site (select "My Favorite Links"), or from our Web site's Home Page. Rob Baker is the owner of HobbyTown USA, the only hobby store in the Mobile area (home 344-760, store 633-8446, htumobile@aol.com ). He is a member of both the LARC and ACMA clubs, flies airplanes, helicopters, and jets. Rob heads up our monthly Pylon Races, an exciting event for spectators and participants. We have around six people who have pylon racing planes. Because of recent runway construction, we haven't had a race in a while, but we are about to start them again. Wish you could come and watch sometime! Rob and many others race their rc cars in front of his store in the Ambassador Plaza parking lot every Saturday evening starting at 7:00. About the boat guys... There are several rc boaters who I know race at Mobile Municipal Park on Sunday afternoons. Contact Rob about the rc boat people, as I don't know any of them personally. By the way, there is a Fly-In coming up tomorrow, Oct. 28, just east of Pensacola, in Navarre at a Navy field. I'll send you a separate e-mail about it, in case you are interested in going there. It should be a well-attended one if the weather is as nice as it has been. Well, I hope this will get you going! If there is any other information you need, please feel free to call (661-8124) or e-mail ( fjetten@aol.com ), and I'll try my best to help you. I'm retired, so I'm either at home or at the field!
