Frits Jetten's Further Big Screen Adventures

Tuesday, January 23, 2001 - Prop Master Scot goes shopping.
Today they are supposed to film a lot of car driving activity. I have no part in it, but the Zero is supposed to be in the car's back seat. That makes me a bit nervous! Where's that hot-glue gun?...

The film crew has mounted a camera outside a pickup truck on the driver's side. It's focused on Wilson (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman). The front of Wilson's car is hooked up to the rear of a pickup truck with a trailer hitch.

During one trip the camera is mounted on the hood of Wilson's car and pointed at Wilson, who pretends to be driving his car which is being towed. During the filming Lisa Rinzler, Director of photography, operates the camera by remote control from the back of the pickup truck. During another trip the camera is in the back of the truck and points at Wilson's car.

During the course of several hours I watch them leave the parking lot at the Guest House Inn and come back three times. Three police cars - one in the front straddling the yellow center line, and two side by side in the rear - escort the pickup truck with the star's car in tow as they film on the road.

Tyler has to go with the small film caravan each trip. While they do the road stuff, Scot decides he wants to go shopping... "You want to go?" he asks. "Sure." I say. We head to Leo's Uniforms & Supplies on Highway 90 near the Beltline.

Here Scot buys a lot of items to outfit a cop for a scene tomorrow. Belt, holster, badges, magazine clip, holder, etc. He's tired of renting them, he says. He also buys three red rubber guns: a Beretta 92F and two Glock 19s. And a walkie-talkie radio, also made of red rubber. For himself Scot selects a nice wide-brimmed hat. Waterproof, no less... Looks good on him! Makes him look like an Aussie!

While store employee Sue writes up the ticket I take a photo of Scot cutting up with the gun in Leo's store. And when Tyler gets back from his road trips he also goes crazy with one of the guns, doing quick-draw stuff and twirling it on his finger. After they are done playing around Scot drills out the barrels and then paints the guns and the radio black.

After the wrap Tyler brings the Zero back to the truck. It's in pretty bad shape again, and needs its daily fix of hot glue... I plug up the hot-glue gun and start repairing it. Tomorrow's filming includes the Zero, starting with the very first scene early in the morning.

I head home after dark... Crew call is at 6:30...
